Legendary New York City golden era spitter Fat Joe has had his share of legal
troubles, but ended up in jail for a somewhat mundane offense. In 1998 the MC was arrested for alleged assault and robbery, as he and fellow rapper Big Pun were accused of beating a man with a baseball bat and stealing his gold necklace. Later, in 2002, Fat Joe was slapped with another assault charge for allegedly getting in to a fight at BB King’s blues club in New York City. Neither charge stuck though, and Fat Joe never saw a minute of prison time for another decade.
Rap star “Fat Joe” reported to federal prison in 2013 in Florida to serve a 4-month sentence for tax evasion.
An attorney for the performer, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena, said his client surrendered himself at a federal detention centre in Miami.
Cartagena pleaded guilty in December 2012 to failing to pay taxes on more than $1 million of income in 2007 and in 2008.
The 42-year-old Miami Beach resident was charged in New Jersey because some of the companies he earns money from are incorporated in the state.
The platinum-selling artist once topped the Billboard charts with the hit “What’s Luv.”
Attorney Jeffrey Lichtman told The Associated Press that Cartagena was in positive spirits and looking forward to getting released and back to his family before Christmas.
