Ashanti is known for her self titled debut album, which featured the hit song “Foolish”, and sold over 503,000 copies in its first week of release throughout the U.S. in April 2002. In 2003, that album won Ashanti her first Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B album. Her second release continued her success and platinum certifications throughout the 2000s and her hit singles.
Ashanti was well known for her popular songs “Foolish”, “Always on Time” featuring Ja Rule, and “What’s Luv?” Featuring Fat Joe. During the year these songs were released, she was acclaimed as the “Princess Of Hip-Hop & R&B by her label and capped off her successful debut by winning eight Billboard awards and two American Music Awards.
But where did Ashanti go? From dominating the airwaves during the early 2000’s, the last song we seem to have heard from her was “only U” in 2004.
Well, in 2003 Ashanti started dating rapper Nelly; however they ended their relationship in 2012 after 9 years.
In 2004 she released her third studio album “Concrete Rose” which eventually gained platinum certification, however the only track to have any real success on this album was “Only U”.
From 2005 to 2007 she tried her hand at acting, appearing in several films such as “John Tucker must die” and “Resident Evil: Extinction.
In 2008 Ashanti released her fourth studio album “The Declaration” however with first week sales of only 86,000 units; this was the lowest selling of any of her records so far.
In 2009 she was released from her record label, with the label citing that the “chemistry that was needed, simply wasn’t there.”
In 2011 she stated that her fifth studio album “Braveheart” would be released later that year, however the date was pushed back several times, and the album wasn’t released until 2 years later.
The singer recently fronted court to face her stalker, who has been stalking her and her family since 2003. The stalker went to prison in 2009 for sending Ashanti’s mother disgusting pictures of himself, and has since continued the gross behaviour. He represented himself in court, which meant he got to cross examine Ashanti himself; however he wound up going back to prison anyway.
Word on the street is that Ashanti was kicked to the curb by her former partner of 9 years Nelly, for lying and cheating. Rumour has it that she was passed around amongst rappers like Jay-Z and Nas, as well as lesser known producers like Chink. Ashanti and Keyshia Cole both used Chink as the leading male love interest in their videos, which fuelled rumours they hated each other because they were both involved with Chink at the same time! To make matters worse, it would appear that while
Chink was having relations with both women, he was also married!!
Apparently Ashanti is working on a sixth album, but given the success of her first album, and the continuing decline of her sales after that, to Ashanti I would say “Quit while you’re ahead!”
And with a net worth of $40 million dollars, why wouldn’t you?
